Christmas is almost here and I'm not ready! I have no idea how to pull off the perfect Holiday decor. I’m so excited, my family's coming over but I don’t know what to give them. I’m emotional, I’m stressed and I’m really down.
I decided to purchase a couple of bright red Poinsettias to supercharge my Christmas spirit. I placed them on my fireplace and they instantly added a cheerful glow to my kitchen. These plants have been right in front of me every year, but I never took the time to appreciate them.
There’s a sweet legend about the Poinsettia. They originated in Southern Mexico in a place called Taxco del Alarcon. These beautiful flowers only bloom in the winter.
A little girl named Pepita was on her way to Christmas Eve services to see the nativity. She wanted to bring a special gift to the baby Jesus, but she was so poor, she had nothing to give. This made Pepita very sad.
Her uncle, noticing her distress, told her, "Even the smallest gift if given in love, would make the infant happy".
Pepita carefully gathered a handful of weeds along the way to church. She lovingly placed her gift at the altar and the weeds burst into a bouquet of brilliant, bright red flowers. The little girl gave all she had, and all she had was love.
With proper care, you can keep your Poinsettia growing all year long. However, this plant must go through a certain amount of darkness for weeks before it will ever bloom again.
Christmas is an emotional time for so many people. There are those that are happy, and some that are sad. Families are broken and some are reconciled. Loved ones are lost and babies are born. Parents have nothing to give, while others have plenty. The homeless have nowhere to go, while others celebrate in their beautiful warm homes. Emotions run deep and many are dark.
Perhaps we all need to go through a certain amount of darkness to shine. Maybe those who go through the deepest darkness will someday bloom the brightest.
My Poinsettias are the perfect Holiday décor this year. They are a reminder to appreciate the people right in front of me and give them all that I have, and all that I have is love.
Merry Christmas Everyone!
